Recent research into motorcycle culture — July 2025

Every month I post links to the most recent research into motorcycle culture, subcultures, clothing and identity, along with the biggest events in the motorcycling calendar. Here’s what caught my eye this month.

The Malle Mile 2025
Eleventh edition, Grimsthorpe Castle, 18-20 July. Off-road scrambles, on-road dashes, the Art of Sprint drag race, the Custom Build Challenge, a Wall of Death and the Malle 500. BikeBound’s Round 1 recap is a useful entry point if you’ve never been.

Faro International Motorcycle Rally
43rd edition, 17-20 July in the Vale das Almas pine forest. About 20,000 attendees, organised since the 1980s by the Moto Clube de Faro. Live concerts (The Waterboys, Moonspell, The Black Mamba), stunt shows, a parade through the city to close. The Portugal News’s preview captures the scale.

IJMS Conference, Akureyri, Iceland
The 12th annual International Journal of Motorcycle Studies conference took place 24-27 July at the Motorcycle Museum of Iceland in Akureyri. The conference programme PDF lists the full schedule of keynotes and panels, with strands across intersectional identity, clothing and textiles, design and visual culture, and motorcycle history. First time IJMS has run in Iceland.

That’s it for this month. If you’ve come across research I’ve missed, feel free to email me.
